Allergies are Only a Footnote?

"Allergies are a footnote in our biographies, not entire chapters of it" Alexandra Allen

I read a really interesting article today from Allergic Living, The Girl Who’s Allergic to Water. I really recommend checking it out, it’s a great read.

This article is actually written by the source, Miss Alexandra Allen, who has something called aquagenic urticaria. She’s a fantastic young woman and did a wonderful job explaining the ins and out of being someone who cannot tolerate being in water. Her life is quite restricted, as you can imagine, but she doesn’t let this challenging disorder hold her back. Not at all.

I read through, absolutely fascinated, and when I got to the end of the story her last sentence floored me. She eloquently puts what so many of us are trying to achieve for ourselves or the kiddos we take care of into words.

“Allergies are a footnote in our biographies, not entire chapters of it.” ~ Alexandra Allen

How amazing is that?

It kind of knocked me over the head like derp, this is what it’s all about. It’s an odd concept for me as an allergy momma. I work incredibly hard to make sure my girl is safe, included, comfortable and happy. It truly feels like my life revolves around food allergies. Probably because it does….I’m even making a career out of it come to think of it.

The Question

So all this buildup to ask you a question. I really want to know […]

Trixie Treats: Dairy-Free Marshmallowy Goodness

We’re almost back to school, August 24th to be exact! I’m so excited and terrified at the same time. Maya will be in intermediate school, which is a whole new experience with a whole different level of people. I’m now a junior in the Dietetics program at Texas Woman’s University. Woo! The past school year was a steep but very pleasant learning curve for us in a new city with new schools and I look forward to sticking in the same place and putting down roots, however shallow they may be.

Speaking of back to school time, I don’t know about you, but every.single.time…. my kiddos come home from school the first thing I hear when we get in the door is my youngest asking me ‘What’s for get home snack?’. Usually it’s something like fruit, carrots, or simply a spoonful of safe nut/seed butters because I’m usually just getting home from school myself.

Trixie Treats Dairy-Free

Sometimes I up the ante a bit when I have a touch of time or inspiration and come up with something a little more interesting.

This recipe certainly fits the bill. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s safe for everybody in our house. It also makes a huge amount, so you’ll have treats on hand for days.

Maya can’t remember having rice krispy treats ever in her life. She has, for the record (second birthday cake after food allergy diagnosis).

Anyway, early this summer, while walking through the store with […]

Epis for Schools!

I’ve been working with Mylan Specialty, the makers of EpiPen, for some time now. They’ve impressed me with their dedication and zeal for keeping people with life threatening allergies, be they food, latex, or insects, safe. It’s easy to see that they not only care, they walk the walk and are tirelessly working to to ensure that as many people as possible have access to the epinephrine they desperately need. Epinephrine is the only medication that can safe a life in the event of anaphylaxis, thus the incredible importance.

The EpiPen4Schools program is undeniable proof that Mylan believes in what they’re doing. It’s recently undergone some changes and I’d like to share them with you so you can spread the word far and wide. This message is important, it has and will continue to save lives.

What is EpiPen4Schools?

EpiPen4Schools is a program that offers schools free EpiPens to keep on hand in the event of an anaphylactic emergency at school with a prescription.

In their own words the program offers:
